Do you ever wonder how your favorite A - list stars seem to effortlessly strut in front of the cameras with the perfect hairstyles to complete their red carpet look? Rain or shine, Anh Co Tran ensures there will be no bad hair days in Hollywood.
The Los Angeles based celebrity hair stylist has graced us with his presence here in New York, where he creates his customized haircuts, aka “lived in hair” right here at The Parlor NYC. Anh, who is now the global creative director at Milbon, shared some of his best styling tips and tricks, explaining the process behind his unique methodology.
You often explain how many of your inspirations come from film, art, and fashion. If you were to pick one decade in the world of film and fashion that has most influenced your work, which would it be and why?
Anh Co Tran: Film from the 60’s, french new wave, a film movement in the 60’s where some of the artists would film in a real sense. It is almost an introduction to the realness of how people live. Back then, films were so perfect but the french new wave finally showed the realness with black and white and the fashion was undone.
As a Los Angeles based celebrity hairstylist who has worked with a large variety of A list stars, which look would you say was your favorite? Who are some of your favorite clients to work with?
Anh Co Tran: I would say Gweneth Paltrow at the Met Ball, her hair was sewn straight. The way that we add volume into her hair and it looks so beautiful!
Steven Yeun. I love his hair because it is the first time I met him and I cut his hair into a pompadour (50’s style haircut) and we made his aesthetic look more cowboyish to GQ.
You are well known for your famous dry - cutting technique. Why do you dry cut as opposed to the more traditional method? What are the benefits?
Anh Co Tran: I dry cut because you can see the shape better, you can see how many layers you put in. It is a lot easier to manage and add texture and movement instantly.
